What is the Colon ?

90% of disease begins in the colon

Many doctors, naturopaths and herbalists have come to the conclusion that over 90% of disease begins in the colon.  Therefore the colon should be cleansed of accumulated waste and brought back to its natural functioning state.

So what is the colon ?

It is our large intestine, sometimes referred to as the bowel.

Quick biology lesson.

Our digestion begins in our mouth - when we chew, then swallow.
The chewed food then enters the stomach via valves.  The stomach acts like a washing machine churning the food around adding acid just at the right time.  The churned up food then moves into the small intestine where all the nutrients and minerals are taken out and passed into the body.  The small intestine is where the acid from the stomach is neutralised.  It then reaches the large intestine.  Once in the large intestine it is squashed and pushed along by the muscles of the colon.  This is where the faeces is formed, moisture is taken from the waste and the action of the muscles are what form it into its shape.    A basic description so that you can understand the passage of food.

So the Large Intestine or the Colon is the place where the waste has to move along.

Problems can start when we don't chew our food properly which means that the body has to work hard to try and break it down and if by the time it reaches the colon it has not been broken down enough then it can become lodged in the soft surfaces areas of the colon and cause a blockage.  This is where a build up can occur, it can also stretch the wall of the colon and cause a pocket in which the waste can get stuck.

The standard western diet is full of processed foods  -  white flour, additives, fizzy drinks.   These can cause mucus to form in the digestive system and this will then mean that the muscles of the colon have to work hard to try and do their job and if overworked they can become sluggish,  this then slows down the transit of waste and prevents vitamins from being absorbed.

Dehydration can also cause problems as it means that the waste is dry and sticky.  It ends up stuck to the walls of the colon rather like limescale on a kettle.  Again this will then slow down the transit of waste and cause the muscles of the colon to become tired and sluggish.   Dehydration is the biggest cause of constipation.

It is a much forgotten part of your body which actually has such a large affect on the rest of your organs when it becomes blocked or forgotten.

Your intestines are guided by you - they are known as your second brain.
How many times have you had butterflies in your tummy, or do you get diarrhea when your nervous.  Your mood can guide your motions.  So its important to look after them.

We all clean our teeth everyday, so why not clean our colon on a regular basis.

  • One in three people who go to their GP have bowel problems.

  • Bowel Cancer is the 2nd largest cancer in the UK with 20,000 cases a year
